Artist's Statement:
A prepossession with injustice informs much of my work. With an understanding of what it is to suffer, I frequently harbor raw feelings of powerlessness about dramatic events not only in my own life, but those that affect the world. I draw parallels between harm done on a large scale, like war, pollution, and corruption, with those on a more personal scale, including child abuse, hatred and waste. Human cruelty has a cyclical nature and requires involvement, knowledge and support for people to stamp it out.
My ideas begin with contemplation about a dramatic event that emotes a definitive feeling of distress. Subsequently, I relentlessly pursue information and imagery through media references. These fragments collage together with paint and found objects into a complex narrative that layers pattern, color and image like a quilt, reflecting the subconscious workings of my mind. The cathartic process of creating helps restore a sense of equilibrium in me, along with the hope that I may have touched someone through my work.
